A milium is a tiny (1-2mm) white cyst that commonly appears around the eyes, cheeks, nose and forehead of both adults and infants. They are formed when keratin (protein found in skin, hair, and nails) becomes entrapped under the top layer of skin. Although harmless, these bumps can be removed by a dermatologist for cosmetic purposes. Do not attempt to remove milia without proper tools as this can result in scarring and/or infection.

Treatment options for milia include:

  • De-roofing the milium with a sterile needled/blade followed by removal of the cyst material
  • Topical retinoid cream for widespread lesions
  • Chemical peels or microdermabrasion
